Harbor Freight Tools plans to open a new site in Yelm, with an early opening slated for late December, followed by a grand opening in early 2022.
The planned location is on Nisqually Plaza at 906 E. Yelm Ave. The company will add 25 to 30 jobs to Yelm’s job market.
For more than 40 years, Harbor Freight Tools has prided itself on being the American benchmark for affordable tools, said Craig Hoffman, director of corporate communications and content for Harbor Freight Tools.
“Our stores stock a full selection of tools and equipment in categories such as automotive, pneumatic and power tools, storage, outdoor electrical equipment, generators, welding supplies, shop equipment. , hand tools and more, âHoffman said.
With more than 1,200 locations nationwide, the company is opening an average of two new locations each week, he said.
Harbor Freight Tools had been interested in opening a site in Yelm for some time, Hoffman said.
âThis will be our third location in Thurston County and our 31st in Washington,â he said. âRight now, for our community customers who want to shop at Harbor Freight, they either have to travel about 12 miles to Lacey or 16 miles to Lakewood, so it will be much more convenient for them. “
At 13,946 square feet, the Nisqually Plaza location will be smaller than other “big box” stores the company is generally classified with, Hoffman said.
âWe see this as a competitive advantage. Many of our customers are professional traders, so it is important for them to be able to park, get in quickly, easily locate the tools they need, and then get to their work site or store, âhe said. -he declares. “For all of our customers, this size (of) store is also easier to navigate.”
Although Harbor Freight Tools is a national business, it sees itself as a local business, Hoffman said. Community being one of his core values, he said, the company looks forward to becoming an active and involved member of the Yelm market.
Harbor Freight Tools was founded in Southern California in 1977, when Eric Smidt, 17, began turning his father’s small phone business into a successful mail order business, Hoffman said. Smidt bypassed the dealers and dealt directly with the factories, later passing the savings on to customers.
âHarbor Freight prides itself on being the best place to work in retail, offering very competitive salaries, great benefits and the opportunity for advancement in one of the fastest growing retail businesses. faster, âHoffman said.
