Constant O. Maffey | Obituary
Constant O. Maffey passed away peacefully on January 5, 2021 at the age of almost 98. He left this life the same way he lived it: without complaint, in love with his family, worshiping God, and having spent all his energy working to make every phase of his life the best it can be for those. who depended on him. . He was born to Elizabeth NJ on February 3, 1923, a first generation son of immigrants from northern Italy. With his brother and sisters, he grew up working in the family locksmith. He had three passions in his life: playing the trumpet, driving motorcycles and airplanes. He was a member of the champions of the NJ State High School Band Competition as First Chair Trumpet. He bought his first Harley Davidson in 1940 and drove it until he enlisted in the military. When the last of his children left home in 1984, he bought his second Harley and rode it until he couldn’t drive, at 83. His fascination with airplanes led him to attend evening school where he obtained his aeronautics and engineering license. After graduating from high school, he broke with his family’s expectations and went to work as a civilian employee of the military, as an aircraft mechanic at Langley Field VA. Like many of his generation, he enlisted in 1942 and then served in the Army Air Corps as a flight engineer on B24 during World War II. He flew missions from southern Italy and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in 2005, since the original documents were lost for 60 years. Upon leaving the service, he returned to Elizabeth NJ and the locksmith where he and his brother continued to work in the family business. The day he met the love of his life, Afra, he told his parents “don’t be surprised if I marry this girl”. As with everything he has done in a lifetime, once he got down to it, it happened. They were married on February 9, 1947. In addition to raising their 8 children as productive members of society, he mastered his craft. He left the family business and started his own specialist locksmith business, receiving at least one patent and creating innovative security solutions for his clients. He was elected president of his professional association, the Associated Locksmiths of America, a testament to his expertise and the esteem he was held by his peers. He obtained the Certified Protection Professional certification through ASIS. He eventually retired at age 75 and moved to Carlisle PA (reduced taxes and auto insurance) where he and Afra enjoyed life and family for 23 years. He continued his deep love and dedication to his family, his faith and his country. He is survived by his wife of 74 years Afra Polli Maffey, their 8 children — Linda Garofalo (Joseph), Paul Maffey (Andra), Gene Maffey (Joan), Susan Rakfal, Daniel Maffey (Emily), Thomas Maffey (Alice) , Marie Buonforte (Thomas) and John Maffey (Christine), their 33 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. The funeral will be on Friday January 8, 2021, hosted by Malpezzi Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg PA.
